This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. The WG Bill Hefner VA Medical Center is seeking a Physician who specializes in Hematology and Oncology for the Kernersville (HCC) in Kernersville, NC. The physician is expected to share attending call responsibilities with Hematology and Oncology specialists in covering nights, weekend and holiday calls as needed. The physician will round with the team of fellow(s), resident(s), and medical student(s) as regards to inpatient settings.
All staff physicians assigned to Medicine Service will meet the needs of customers while supporting VA mission and establish and maintain professional relationships within Medicine Service, and with other services and facility management which result in improved patient care Duties include but are not limited to: Administrative: Serves as acting chief of the section of Hematology and Oncology, as needed.
Serves as acting program manager of the section of Hematology and Oncology, as needed. Provides guidance, and support to the advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) assigned to Medicine Service in their respective areas of expertise. Provides guidance, teaching, and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to Medicine Service/subspecialty services and clinics.
Participate in improvement activities with emphasis on Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI). Participates in and attends medical center committees and/or teams as assigned by the Chief Medicine Service and in his/her absence.
Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, as assigned by Chief, Medicine Service Stays informed on developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education Clinical: Provide consultation in Hematology and Oncology, both for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Provide clinical assessment and evaluations of Inpatients and Outpatients with hematologic and oncologic needs. Provide Health care management of assigned veteran patients with acute and chronic illnesses. Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studies. Ordering consultation and referrals - Inpatients and Outpatients. Provide patient follow-ups, as appropriate. Provide Health promotion and disease prevention. Provide Patient, family, and staff education and counseling.
Be aware of clinical research and trials available for Veterans.
Participates in multidisciplinary activities involving the treatment plan and discharge plans of patients admitted to the Medicine bed services Develops the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care Research: Supports the medical Center-wide research mission Assists in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of patient care when appropriate.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
