The Transplant Nephrologist provides nephrology care, educates trainees, and maintains effective professional relationships to support high-quality patient care. Physicians must hold an MD/DO from a VA-approved school, complete an ACGME residency, and maintain an unrestricted U.S. license. Board eligibility/certification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology is required.

Serves as staff attending for the Transplant Nephrology consult service as assigned and participates in the Transplant Nephrology peer review process when requested. Completes all medical record documentation, encounters, and trainee supervision attestations in the electronic medical record within prescribed timeframes; documents and rates administrative and clinical information thoroughly and accurately. Participates in the formal education of residents and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences focused on nephrology and kidney transplantation. Assists in the development and implementation of education and training programs for medical students and residents rotating through the Medical Service's accountable Transplant Nephrology Clinical Services. Provides guidance, support, and supervision to nurse practitioners, medical students, and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to Transplant Nephrology and related subspecialty services and clinics, according to facility standards and as assigned by the Chief, Medical Service. Revises work schedules and assignments to meet frequent, abrupt, and unpredictable changes in prescribed workloads and deadlines to meet patient care, healthcare, and agency needs. Follows agency and Service-level expectations for time/attendance and modification of clinical duties for planned leave. Supports the medical center-wide research mission, especially as it relates to nephrology and kidney transplant care and encourages research participation among other staff members. Assists in conducting studies regarding nephrology and kidney transplant treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of patient care when appropriate. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
