Key Responsibilities

Duties: Position is primarily for a MEDICAL Ophthalmologist in the Fort Worth, Texas eye clinic to function as an integral part of the eye care team, examining the human eye and ascertaining defects of the human visual systems. Select candidates may be considered for a HYBRID MEDICAL/SURGICAL position (cornea fellowship training preferred).

This position would entail 75-80% time as MEDICAL ophthalmology in Fort Worth, Texas eye clinic and 20-25% time in Dallas, Texas eye clinic. As MEDICAL/SURGICAL ophthalmology, responsibilities (in addition to those listed below) would include ophthalmology resident training both in the Dallas eye clinic and Dallas operating room.

For candidates considered for a HYBRID MEDICAL/SURGICAL position, appropriate fellowship training is preferred in order to perform simple and complex ophthalmic lasers, biopsies and other routine surgical procedures. The HYBRID MEDICAL/SURGICAL position will include on-call responsibilities. Primary eye care and vison care duties include but are not limited to: 1. prescribing glasses; 2. ordering diagnostic imaging and laboratory studies; 3. determining a diagnosis; 4.

creating a treatment plan; 5. patient and family health education. Components of primary ophthalmology eye and vision care include but are not limited to: 1. emergency care (evaluating/managing/triaging emergent, non-surgical eye conditions); 2. problem oriented care (managing patients referred with complaints typical of routine disorders); 3.

preventative health services (performing mandated examinations such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and glaucoma screenings). Clinic procedures include but are not limited to: 1. medical and ocular history; 2. visual acuity testing; 3. pupillary function testing; 4. color vision testing; 5. extraocular muscle function and binocularity testing; 6. refractive and accommodative testing; 7. external examination of the eye and adnexal structures; 8.

biomicroscopic evaluation of the ocular adnexa, anterior, and/or posterior segments of the eye including gonioscopic and fundus lens evaluation; ophthalmoscopic, tonometric, and perimetric evaluations. There may be other administrative or patient care duties as assigned. The incumbent will be supervised by the chief of ophthalmology section at the Dallas VA Medical Center for quality, productivity and adherence to performance measures.

Productivity ranges expected are minimum 16 complete exams per day on average. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of your start date. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Paid Parental Leave: 12 weeks of paid leave for birth of child, adoption, foster care.

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
