The North Florida/South Georgia VA HCS Primary Care Service is seeking a dynamic physician to serve as Regional Chief Medical Officer. Based in Gainesville, FL, this leadership role serves as Service Chief for two or more primary care outpatient clinics.
Reporting to the Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS), the incumbent oversees all clinical operations, administrative activities, performance improvement initiatives, and educational programs to ensure excellence across assigned clinics.
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

A summary of the duties is mentioned below but not limited to: Clinical Responsibilities Care Delivery: Directs quality, consistent, and timely primary and specialty care across satellite and community-based outpatient clinics. Program Development: Oversees operational clinical programs, policies, and standards for outpatient care delivery.
Care Integration: Enhances veteran access to medical expertise by streamlining and sharing services between outpatient facilities and medical centers. Safety Oversight: Leads patient and employee safety innovations, maintaining overall accountability for clinic safety programs. Direct Care: Participates in direct patient care, serving as a clinical role model for peers.
Administrative Leadership Policy Enforcement: Enforces medical center policies, outpatient clinic rules, and medical staff bylaws. Regulatory Compliance: Develops internal review systems to ensure compliance with agency and accrediting requirements. Strategic Alignment: Integrates clinic operations with medical center, VISN 8, VHA initiatives, and community agencies.
Operational Efficiency: Leads system-wide workflows to improve cost-effectiveness, productivity, and problem resolution. Committee Service: Serves on strategic planning, quality review, and cross-agency management committees. Personnel & Labor Relations: Directs labor-management relations, EEO, merit promotions, and employee career development.
Performance Evaluations: Completes annual proficiency evaluations for Primary Care Chiefs, Nurse Managers, and direct reports using performance metrics. Performance Improvement & Education Quality Compliance: Drives Joint Commission and VA performance improvement requirements, engaging and educating staff. Educational Oversight: Manages educational programming across assigned outpatient clinics and participates in primary care training.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
