Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program EDRP, a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

The Birmingham VA Health Care System provides you with outstanding healthcare, trains America's future healthcare providers, and conducts important medical research. We provide health care services at 11 locations in Alabama. Facilities include our Birmingham VA Medical Center and 10 community-based outpatient clinics in Bessemer, Birmingham, Childersburg, Gadsden, Guntersville, Huntsville, Irondale, Jasper, Shoals, and Anniston-Oxford.

Our medical center provides Veterans with comprehensive primary and specialty health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. We also provide specialty care for Veterans referred from other VA facilities. Our medical center is a recognized leader in palliative care and multiple sclerosis. It's also 1 of only 13 medical centers that offer a rehabilitation center for Veterans who are blind.

Maintains an active role in the assigned multidisciplinary health care team, promotes preventive health measures, and manages the acute and chronic conditions of assigned patients. Provides comprehensive assessment, diagnosis work-up, and clinic intervention. This includes performing comprehensive patient assessments, incorporating patient health history, performing physical examinations, and conducting patient education.

Such care includes both scheduled and unscheduled appointments. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm or 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday - Friday (Several standard tours of duty are available for consideration based on service line and incumbent needs) After-hours call and rounding for hospitalized patients are not required.

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
