Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (1 to 5 years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Key Responsibilities

DUTIES: This Staff Psychiatrist serves as the outpatient mental health provider for Veterans requiring outpatient medication management as part of the telemental health team at Lyons. The provider will manage both scheduled and unscheduled patients through video sessions as part of the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP). Duties include: Providing holistic, strength-based, person-centered mental health care to the assigned panel of Veterans.

This includes, but is not limited to, medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders and psychiatric care for Veterans with a range of mental health diagnoses and trauma-related experiences. Working as a team member with other clinic staff (e.g., prescribers, therapists, and schedulers). Providing coverage for other prescribers when needed. Collaborating with other hospital and MH&BS programs and staff to ensure holistic, patient-centered care.

Demonstrating mastery of the theories, principles, concepts, and methodologies of clinical psychiatric practice. Exercising sound judgment in selecting and/or adapting standard and accepted theories, techniques, and practices when treating patients and prescribing medications.

Completing all required clinical documentation-including progress notes, treatment plans, clinical reminders, History and Physical examinations, and various risk assessments-in a timely manner (per hospital and MH&BS SOPs) within the electronic medical record. Completing forms, letters, and other documentation as required for Veterans. Providing clinical consultation to colleagues as needed. Attending team/clinic meetings, MHC staff meetings, and MH&BS general staff meetings.

Requirements & Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.

The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
