The incumbent also oversees preparation of special reports and responses, Congressional responses, briefing papers, issue briefs, and decision papers for the medical center leadership, which may be highly sensitive, confidential, and of a complex nature. The Chief of MH is responsible for development of policies and procedures and may develop performance standards, position descriptions and functional statements as well as monitoring the clinical performance of staff.
The incumbent conducts performance appraisals and performs other clinical and administrative responsibilities to ensure that the mission of the service and the medical center has been satisfied.
Major duties include but may not be limited to: Leads a multidisciplinary service with a Tier 1A faciality Participates in an effective clinical program with attention to patient outcome indicators Practices within the scope of assigned privileges Complies with the bylaws, rules and regulations of the facility and agency Meet medical staff criteria for initial appointments and reappointment, including CME Comply with prescribed record keeping practices in accordance with the rules, regulations and bylaws Complies with prescribed information security policy and procedures Works effectively with patients, families, staff, co-workers and other health care professionals Participates in Mental Health Service Educational and/or research activities and scheduled meetings Completes all assigned health care record reviews, peer reviews, performances of providers of the incumbent under supervisions, etc., within the identified time frames.
Complies with assigned Peer Reviews and maintain quality assurance standards. Board certification is required due to its faculty status due to UCSF affiliation.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
