The Section Chief is responsible for ensuring the highest quality of health services in a broad spectrum of clinical environments, with managerial and supervisory oversight, to all GEC Teams within the GEC Service. GEC teams provide routine and urgent health evaluation and intervention in outpatient, inpatient, and home-based settings.
Duties include, but are not limited to: The physician will perform evaluations, diagnosis(es), treatments, and preventions of health disorders. Perform comprehensive examinations and assessments, determining diagnosis(es), and completing medical work-ups. Develop and implement treatment plans, referring to other specialties or appropriate community resources.
Provide appropriate clinical documentation of patient care in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) in a timely manner. Training regarding the use of CPRS will be provided by the VAMC. All documentation shall be completed in accordance with VA policy and procedures. Ensure accreditation requirements are met for all applicable survey and inspection processes to include, but are not limited to compliance with JCHACO, CARF, and OIG.
Follow all VA guidelines regarding infection control and safety. Adhere to all quality performance measures. Provide examinations/reviews as assigned to GEC support services. Collaborate with approved fee-based community inpatient programs to assist/coordinate discharge planning, medication and follow-up appointments, as well as, coordinating with ambulatory care services, as appropriate. May participate in supervision of residents and medical students assigned to GEC.
Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients. Ensures practice of medicine is consistent with TJC, CARF, HIPPA, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, and mandatory continuing education.
Provides a full range of diagnostic services including assessment and the most appropriate therapeutic techniques in providing quality care. The Physician may serve as a team health team leader with responsibilities for coordinating consults and triage of specialty clinic referrals. Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care.
Orders diagnostic tests and consultations, and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions. May participate in supervision and teaching in support of the residency program, performs on call duties, and performs other directly related duties as assigned. Areas which the physician is assigned and has clinical privileges to practice may include all GEC program areas (inpatient, outpatient and home care).

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
