Cardiologists are internal medicine specialists who care for patients at risk for and w/heart disease. The field includes medical diagnosis, treatment of coronary heart disease & failure, valvular heart disease, congenital heart disease, heart rhythm disorders.
Cardiac electrophysiologists recognize normal and abnormal anatomy of the heart and the conduction system, general physiology and heart EP and basic mechanisms of rhythm disorders, syncope, sudden death and other arrhythmia disorders.
Functions or Scopes of Practice Diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term cardiac health issues. Adept at recognizing abnormalities and following established protocols, providing appropriate services and treatments or referring patients to other disciplines and services as necessary. Enhance patient awareness by providing clear, supportive education on preventive care, medical conditions, and the proper use of prescribed treatments.
Extensive knowledge of cardiology principles, techniques, and practices, as well as current trends and developments in the field. Informed of the latest research and incorporate relevant findings into clinical practice. Organizes, leads, and participates in quality improvement projects related to hospital operations. Engages in continuing education to maintain and enhance professional knowledge.
Responsible for evaluating findings and making technical recommendations independently, considered an expert in the field. Able to provide care and /or services appropriate to the age of patients being served, and which is appropriate to the cognitive; emotional, chronological maturation of the patient. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
