This position is in the Maintenance & Repair section at the VHA New York Harbor Brooklyn Healthcare System, Facility Maintenance Service. Incumbents will be assigned a duty station accordingly. The Pipefitter Supervisor is responsible for supervising pipefitters and plumbers.
Duties include, but are not limited to: Nature of Supervisory Responsibility: Incumbent is the foreman of the Plumbing Shop, which consists of pipefitting, and plumbing staff. The plumbing Shop is part of the Maintenance and Repair Section of Engineering Service. Incumbent reports directly to the Maintenance and Repair Section Chief and has the Assistant Chief as second level supervisor.
He/she has the responsibility for effective and efficient operation and maintenance of all gas systems and equipment, such as steam heating, steam generation, and vacuum systems, radiators, and circulation pumps, sewerage system, all pressure steam systems and associated parts, hot water generators, sterilizers, heating systems, fire suppression systems, pneumatic tube system, natural gas, medical gases and non-medical equipment.
S/He must be able to lay out and install various kinds of piping, risers, and flexible branches at the proper level and incline; determine the placement and elevation and install steam generators, vacuum and condensate pumps, and radiators; and replace heat exchangers, flash and expansion tanks, and automatic and manual control valves. The installation, maintenance, and repair of all aforementioned equipment falls within their purview.
Responsible for independently diagnosing, planning, and completing projects or work orders involving major systems in the entirety. He/she must show proficiency with the work order system and report on metrics such as preventive maintenance completion, corrective maintenance turnaround time, and adherence to documentation of services standards.
Planning: Incumbent is responsible to coordinate work with all care/service/departments in the Medical Center and outside service vendors, contractors, and other service companies/agencies. Advance planning to eliminate unnecessary loss of service to patient areas; this would curtail patient care of result in serious discomfort to the entire Medical Center/CLC.
Work Direction: During times of heavy workload or special projects, incumbent is required to coordinate and work with carpenters, painters, AC mechanics, electronic mechanics, maintenance mechanics, etc. Incumbent may be required to assist these employees in their trades. Administration: The incumbent of this position supports and explains management programs, recommends performance ratings, training, and changes in performance standards.
The incumbent will advise and counsel workers on new work techniques appropriate for their specific trade, advise and counsel workers, investigate grievances and complaints and informally resolve. Performs other duties as assigned. The incumbent is the first level supervisor in charge of all work performed by the pipefitting/plumbing shop.
At a full complement, the incumbent will supervise Pipefitters and Plumbers at the assigned duty station in the NYH facilities indoor and outdoor. The incumbent directly supervises the following levels of work:- Plumbers WG-09 - 4+ positions- Pipefitters WG-10 - 6+ positions.
