Job Summary

The Podiatrist, in the Podiatry Section of Surgical Care at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), reports directly to the Chief of Podiatry. The Podiatrist is responsible for providing medical and surgical services to eligible veterans and administrating the section of Podiatry.

Key Responsibilities

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT & will remain open until November 25, 2026 or until positions are filled. Eligible applications received will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Clinical Duties: Responsible for performing operations that require a Podiatric surgeon.

Operations include, but are not limited to, lesser digital deformity repair, bunionectomy, flatfoot and cavus foot repair, amputation and limb salvage and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery, forefoot surgery. Responsible for evaluation of patients in the Podiatry clinic, emergency room, intensive care unit, operating room, and other inpatient services.

Supervise trainees including medical students, podiatric medical students, residents, and fellows in all these settings. Responsible for providing on-call in accordance with the call schedule. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.

Responsible for the delivery of podiatric health care in the promotion of health education, with the objective being to stimulate public interest in early detection and care for the identification of common foot problems and complications of systemic diseases and to prevent deformity, disability and complications.

Assess all patients for their degree of risk to limb loss and will maintain an interdisciplinary approach to amputation prevention to reduce the incidents of amputation and other lower extremity complications resulting from diabetic foot ulcers and peripheral vascular disease.

Assess patient's need for and prescribe the appropriate prosthetic aids and devices including aids, appliances or parts which are required to replace, support or substitute for a deformed, weakened or missing anatomical portion of the foot. Closely interact with prosthetics, along with other interdisciplinary health care professionals, to provide care and treatment to amputee veterans, veterans at risk for amputation and veterans with foot deformities.

Administrative Duties: Responsible for the daily running of the Podiatry clinic in both the inpatient, OR, and outpatient setting. Responsible for maintaining clinical flow efficiency in the outpatient setting and working to keep clinic and operative wait times low. Support and enhance CTVHCS philosophy and goals. Teaching Duties: Teach Podiatric Surgery fellows, residents, and podiatric medical students in the clinics, on the wards, and in the operating room.

Maintain adjunct clinical professor faculty status at the colleges of podiatric medicine. Research Duties: Actively participate in Podiatric research, serving as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on funded and non-funded research projects. Serve as research advisor and mentor to Podiatric residents, Podiatric graduate students, and visiting faculty.

Requirements & Education

Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine and surgery, approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American Podiatry Medical Association in the year in which the degree was granted. Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment.
