Job Summary

This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Operations, Security and Preparedness (OSP), Police Service and is responsible for VAs nationwide security, preparedness, and law enforcement operations with primary focus on protective and investigative services at VA Healthcare System.

Major Duties

The Police Officer will perform a full range of police duties by following and executing rules, regulations, or procedures covering law and rules enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts, and/or crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction. Major duties include but are not limited to: Investigations (25%) Performs a wide variety of duties encompassing investigations and enforcing federal, state, and local laws pertaining to violations on government property and federally controlled assets. Investigates suspected instances of noncompliance with laws, rules, policy, regulations, executive orders, or other mandatory regulatory requirements by individuals or organizations Evaluates crime prevention programs and recommending changes to reduce opportunities for theft, assault, illegal entry, or other kinds of violations Coordinates with other law enforcement agencies to gather facts or evidence for use in assigned cases Conducts investigations, apprehensions, or detention of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the US, protection, and transport of U.S. officials Provides services routinely at all segments of VA facilities located over large geographical areas, some of which may be in different states, counties, municipalities, or townships Enforcement of Federal, State and Agency Laws (30%) Performs a wide variety of duties encompassing the enforcement and compliance of federal, state, and local laws on government property and federally controlled assets, with arrest authority Bears departmental firearms Serves and executes search and arrest warrants; serves subpoenas and summonses; apprehends wanted persons who are accused of crimes in other jurisdictions Makes arrests with and without warrants Supervises federal medical center regulations and policy compliance Crisis Intervention/Suicide Prevention (25%) Serves as a member of a Crisis Intervention Team, responding to and recognizing Veterans experiencing mental health crisis, utilizing advanced de-escalation strategies and knowledge of VA resources to ensure the best possible outcome for our nation's Veterans Responds to alarms, threats and to large crowds of hostile or agitated individuals Manage events and maintain safety, security, and order Works closely with clinical partners, including Veterans Justice Outreach Coordinators, Suicide Prevention Coordinators, Veteran Crisis Line Responders, and others, to ensure a multidisciplinary response to Veterans in Crisis, both on and off VA-controlled property Inspections (20%) Conducts inspections of federal VA facilities and worksites for compliance with VA physical security and infrastructure protection requirements Identifies security vulnerabilities and develops and documents crime prevention programs to mitigate harm to people, property, and sensitive information Prepares a report of findings, providing detailed conclusions and recommendations for program deficiencies, improvements, corrections of irregularities, and rectification of injustices revealed by inspections Analyzes problems, determines deficiencies, finalizes inspection results to include draft, review, editing, and evaluation, and takes corrective action Work Schedule: Shift work to include weekends and holidays Telework: This position may be authorized for telework.
