The Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking a Full-Time, Physician - Deputy Associate Chief of Staff to join the Mental Health Service Line at the VA Clinic in Coralville, Iowa. As the Deputy ACOS, the physician is the second for the ACOS and is responsible for assuming the direct authority of the ACOS in the event of the ACOS's absence or when otherwise needed to do so. Plans, implements, and provides clinical and administrative oversight to Mental Health activities across the service line including requirements for staff, budget, equipment, and supplies. Has direct professional supervision of staff within the same discipline.
Has programmatic oversight and shared responsibility for the Mental Health Service Line. Responsibilities include supervision of staff, program management, and administrative responsibilities that are complex in scope and cover a significant portion of the medical center. The employee will provide treatment for beneficiaries with general mental health disorders in a variety of treatment settings, including tele-mental health.
The employee must be skilled in treating mental health disorders. Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
