Job Summary

The Primary Purpose of the Position is: to provide care and rehabilitation to those Veterans with a variety of disabilities and recommend adjustment in patients' treatment plans. The Organizational Location of the Position is: Recreation Therapy Service, VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS), Bonham, TX.

Key Responsibilities

This is a direct patient care position in which the incumbent is responsible for performing the work of a recreation therapist in the medical center. The work encompasses a variety of different duties and responsibilities: Provide direct patient care and receive guidance from higher-level supervisory staff members for only the most complex patients and require only general supervision. Review recreation therapy consults and conduct comprehensive evaluations.

Demonstrates an advanced competency, which qualifies them to perform patient evaluations and treatment procedures independently on patients with various complex diagnoses and disabilities. Evaluates the assigned patients' mental, emotional, social, and physical capabilities to determine the patients' needs in Recreation Therapy.

Incumbent conducts, analyzes, interprets, and reports assessment data based on functional domains (cognitive, sensory, social, affective, physical and leisure). Perform documentation of patient care, including comprehensive assessments/evaluations or assessment screens, individualized progress notes indicating progress, or lack of, toward treatment goals, encounters, consultations, care plans, and other reports as needed. Incumbent.

Evaluate patient needs for additional, alternative, or termination of services, monitor the effectiveness of intervention plans, and make modifications as needed. Adheres to Medical Center and service policies. Utilizes a computerized patient record system by the established procedures. Adheres to Medical Center Privacy and Information Security policy.

Promotes effective communication with all patients, caregivers, treatment team members, Medical Center staff, and community partners. Accreditation Information: The bachelor's degree or higher, must be from an accredited college or university approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) OR a bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist. Degree must be approved by the NCTRC.

NOTE: If your school has changed names, or is no longer in existence, you must provide this information in your application. NOTE: If your school was accredited by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) at the time of graduation but is no longer listed on the NCTRC website, you must provide documentation of accreditation with your application packet.
