The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager (NM) in overseeing operations of a nursing unit/patient care area. This role combines clinical proficiency with leadership responsibilities and is often considered part of the succession plan for future NM positions, providing opportunities to develop management skills and prepare for higher-level leadership.
THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION Serves as the first line supervisor of nursing personnel in the patient care area ensuring the head nurse/NM retains VA Handbook 5007 requirements (examples may include but are not limited to supervising the nursing assistants and/or licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/LVNs) in the patient care area or supervising the nursing personnel on evening and/or night shift). Approves schedules and leave for employees under their direct supervision.
Appraises performance, recommends performance standards, and performance awards for employees under their direct supervision. Serves as hiring official during the recruitment process for employees under their direct supervision. Recommends proposed discipline or grievance adjustments for employees under their direct supervision.
In addition, the Supervisory ANM is responsible for assisting the NM with personnel on the unit who they do not directly supervise; expectations may include but are not limited to: Drafts schedules and leave for final approval by the NM. Provides input into the performance of employees with the final evaluation completed by the NM. Assists with making recommendations for selection of candidates for employment.
Applies clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes; provides feedback to the NM who ultimately ensures nursing personnel provide timely nursing care that complies with generally accepted standards of practice.
Oversees work assignments and provides reports of contact or assists with fact findings as needed to provide the NM with the information necessary to make recommendations for counseling and/or disciplinary actions.
