Job Summary

The Non-Supervisory Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager (NM) in overseeing operations of a nursing Perioperative Unit-patient care area. Fosters team development, ensures compliance with standards of clinical practice, and serves as a key liaison between staff and leadership.

This role combines clinical knowledge with leadership responsibilities and is often considered part of the succession plan for future NM positions, providing opportunities to develop management skills.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Nurse Manager position is located at the Overton Brooks VAMC in Nursing/Patient Care Services. The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager for the Operating Room (OR), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Same Day Surgery (SDS) unit in the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive nursing care for Veterans.

Provides clinical leadership, direction, and support to Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Nursing Assistants, and other assigned staff. Coordinates staffing assignments based on patient acuity, workload, staff competencies, and operational needs. Promotes safe, effective, evidence-based, and Veteran-centered nursing care.

Serves as a clinical resource for staff and assists with complex patient care situations and clinical decision-making. Assists with patient flow, admissions, transfers, discharges, and coordination of care. Promotes patient safety and participates in quality improvement, performance improvement, and risk management activities. Monitors compliance with nursing standards, VA policies, infection prevention practices, medication safety, and other patient safety requirements.

Participates in employee orientation, competency assessment, education, mentoring, performance evaluation, and professional development. Assists with recruitment, retention, employee recognition, and performance management activities. Promotes effective communication and collaboration among nursing staff, providers, Veterans, families, and interdisciplinary team members. Assists with resolving patient concerns, staff issues, and operational problems.

Supports effective utilization of personnel, supplies, equipment, and other resources. Participates in unit meetings, councils, committees, policy development, and organizational initiatives. Assists with preparation for inspections, accreditation activities, and regulatory reviews. Assumes delegated responsibilities and provides unit leadership in the absence of the Nurse Manager. Non-Supervisory ANM supports the NM with the operation of their designated unit(s).

Provides coverage for other ANMs as needed. Responsible and accountable for the direction and oversight of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance. Develops ability to function as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based cutting-edge programs/processes.

Drafting schedules and leave for final approval by the NM. Providing input into the performance of employees with the final evaluation completed by the NM. Assisting with making recommendations for selection of candidates for employment. Applying clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes; providing feedback to the NM who ultimately.
