Job Summary

The Chief, Quality and Patient Safety (Nurse V), is an advanced healthcare executive who executes responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and innovative approaches in the guidance and direction of a variety of complex patient care programs and services.

They function as a leader, administrator, and consultant with a wide range of experience and authority that is broad enough to improve care for Veterans through their influence over policy development and decisions.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief, Quality & Patient Safety (Registered Nurse), provides leadership and oversight for organization-wide quality management initiatives. You will carry responsibility for integrated programs that cross service and discipline lines-impacting broad population groups.

As an advisor, administrator, educator, and mentor, you'll establish and maintain strong relationships across all levels of the VISN and medical center personnel, facilitating collaboration and continuous improvement.

The Chief, Quality and Patient Safety duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Executes leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross services and/or discipline lines and, influence the organizational healthcare mission. Functions as an advisor, administrator, educator, consultant, and mentor who possesses a wide range of experience and leadership ability.

Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all levels of Veterans Integrated Services Network (VISN) and medical center personnel and relate effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels. Contributes ideas and recommendations for the establishment of standards of care, policies, and objectives for the enhancement of quality management organization wide.

Assists in policy-making activities as related to customer service and the overall functioning of administrative and clinical programs. Provides senior leadership and oversight for daily clinical and administrative operations within Quality Management (QM) Program. Best qualified criteria: Demonstrated ability to set and execute a long-term strategic vision for quality, safety, and value-based care.

Proven experience aligning quality initiatives with organizational mission, measurable objectives, and system-wide improvement goals. Expertise in quality management systems (Lean, Six Sigma, ISO 9001) and evidence-based improvement methodologies. Strong background in patient safety, high-reliability principles, and Just Culture. Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and collaborate across clinical, administrative, and executive areas.

Experience partnering with regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, and academic affiliates to advance quality standards. Skilled in using analytics, audits, and performance metrics to drive decision-making and monitor progress. Demonstrated ability to oversee quality assurance, risk management, patient safety, and compliance programs. Experience managing resources, staffing, budgets, and operational priorities within complex organizations.

Proven success building and developing a high-performing, quality-focused workforce through coaching, mentoring, and education. Ability to influence system-wide standards, policies, and care delivery methods across service lines.

Occasional different tour may be needed based on facility need. Telework: Available. Ad hoc may be approved on an occasional, non-routine basis as determined by supervisor.
