Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse Staff Development (CNSD) is a specialized nursing practice that facilitates the professional role development and growth of nurses and other healthcare personnel along the continuum from novice to expert. Delivers a fundamental understanding of adult learning principles and a lifelong learner that can practice with flexibility to adapt or change learning strategies based on the assessment of learning needs and evidenced based practice.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Staff Development (CNSD) is primarily responsible for the ongoing education of nursing staff and coordinates orientation of new employees and for developing and implementing a learning plan for improving identified deficiencies at the unit level.

The CNSD will work collaboratively with Patient Care Service leadership and all Services within the medical center and its CBOCs in the development and implementation of patient care and facility-wide educational programs and initiatives.

Other duties include but not limited to the following: Actively participate in providing educational opportunities, continuing education programs designed for career advancement as well as function in classroom teaching environments, clinical arenas, and as group facilitator during training and implementation of changes in nursing related applications.

Applies clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision­ making, and evaluating outcomes within the immediate practice setting. Demonstrates the ability to improve the effectiveness of communications and interactions with others, to inspire their cooperation and confidence to ensure safe and effective outcomes in the current practice setting.

Serves as an advocate for patients, families, and caregivers, improving outcomes for the immediate practice setting. Assesses the immediate practice setting to identify efficient, cost-effective care delivery Meets the needs of the Veteran and as appropriate the Veteran's family, caregiver and/or significant other, the Veteran's representative, visitors to VA facilities, all VA staff and other customers while supporting VA missions.
