General Description of Assigned Duties: The Nursing, GEC Nurse Clinician is responsible and accountable for the provision of educational programs, orientation and training activities, unit and facility in-services, and the facilitation of Elsevier and TMS training for all Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) nursing staff within the Nursing, GEC service line practice areas.
The Nursing, GEC practice areas include Community Living Centers, Hospice and Palliative Care, and Home-based Primary Care. The Nursing, GEC Nurse Clinician is a skilled Registered Nurse with a background in the education of nurses, who can work independently to optimize patient care, patient safety and operational efficiency.
Nurse Clinician assists with developing unit orientation, annual and Just-In-Time unit-based competencies and will provide in the moment education as needed with staff. The Nursing, GEC Nurse Clinician facilitates the orientation of new staff; coordinates and plans clinical experience and specialty rotation with new staff. Collaborate with other Nurse Clinicians in the development of in-services, competencies, and evaluations of knowledge and skills taught.
The Nursing, GEC Nurse Clinician must establish and maintain productive relationships throughout the organization and relate effectively to internal/external customers, their families, and the community. Attend local and VISN meetings regarding education and compliance as applicable. The Nursing, GEC Nurse Clinician will also coordinate local education opportunities within the organization and outside of the organization.
Ensure staff are compliant with survey readiness for Ascellon, Joint Commission, and other surveying bodies. The Nursing, GEC Nurse Clinician demonstrates knowledge and ability to facilitate adult learning while demonstrating excellent communication skills (written, verbal, non-verbal) and effective use of technology in communications.
The Registered Nurse in the Community Living Centers (CLCs) and Hospice/Palliative Care Unit is a professional nurse that is accountable for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating direct and indirect nursing care outcomes.
They provide care for ongoing nursing care to Long-Term Care Residents and perform an array of clinical skills such as medication administration, IV infusions, PCA pumps, Tube Feedings, PICC lines, Wound Care, Pressure Injury Prevention strategies, Tracheostomy care, Electrocardiograms (EKG), Ostomy Care, end of life care and palliative care. The RN demonstrates proficiency using the nursing process in providing care for residents with complex nursing care needs.
Guides and directs other who provide resident-centered care. Completes initial assessments and reassessments of the resident's condition and response to treatment. Initiates follow-up as needed. Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties: The Nurse II GEC Nurse Clinician is responsible for providing expert, evidence-based education to staff.
Provides educational instruction and training for nursing staff in the Nursing, GEC practice area: the Community Living Centers, Hospice and Palliative Care, and Home-Based Primary Care. The GEC Nurse Clinician understands instructional design, implementation, and application related to education and training. Performs learning needs assessments, develops educational training for clinical staff within organization.
Assists with the orientation of new employees, evaluation of their progress in the orientation process, and development and implementation of a learning plan for improving identified deficiencies. Monitors and tracks BLS/Advanced Life Support (ALS) compliance within Nursing, GEC. Collaborates with Nursing, the GEC leadership team to support and evaluate responses to emergency responses withing Nursing, GEC service line. Participates, and evaluates mock codes.

Nursing Bridge Programs: Nursing bridge programs are accelerated nurse education programs which rely upon existing nursing knowledge and education. Graduates from nursing bridge programs that meet accreditation requirements specific grade level requirements in this standard must also be met in addition to the following:(a) Master's Level Bridge Program Education Appointments Prior to Graduation.
Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who achieve the level in their education in which they have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program.
Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis for any period up to three years contingent upon full completion of the professional nursing education program, if education verification provided by the school supports the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) equivalency.
Upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program, the Nurse may be converted to a permanent appointment under the provisions of section 7401(a)(1) of title 38. Failure to complete the bridge program on which the temporary appointment was based will result in termination of the appointment.
Degree in a Related Field: A graduate level or doctorate degree in health care/management related fields from an institution accredited by the State and approved by the Department of Education at the time the candidate completed the program may be credited as specifically indicated in grade requirements. The graduate level or doctorate degree and coursework must provide evidence in support of the nursing role and duties associated with the assignment and grade level.
Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees. Dimension Requirement for Nurse III: Nurses at Nurse III must meet ALL the following dimension requirements to qualify for Nurse III. Practice. Demonstrates expertise in professional practice using the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation) with improved evidence-based and/or data-driven outcomes beyond the immediate practice setting.

Leads the identification and integration of evidence-based practice/research with clinical expertise to improve quality of care and resource utilization at the expert level with improved outcomes beyond the immediate practice setting.
