Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Key Responsibilities

The VA Western New York Healthcare System in Buffalo is seeking a Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN) to provide direct patient care in a critical care setting. The RN is responsible and accountable for their individual nursing practice, exercising sound clinical judgment to assess patient conditions, plan and implement care, and evaluate outcomes.

The nurse determines the appropriate delegation of tasks to other members of the care team, consistent with their professional obligation to ensure safe, effective, and optimal patient care at all times. Functions or Scopes of Practice: Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for coordinating care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.

Administers medications and procedures according to established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice; determines appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the obligation to provide optimal care. Formulates a plan of care based on nursing assessments. Seeks guidance on how to improve care provided to patients and families.

Delegates elements of care to the appropriate individual based on assessed patient needs, condition, and safety. Applies nursing principles and theory with developing (limited) application of critical thinking skills. Works with close supervision; responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice, seeking direction from others as needed. Manages assigned workload; organizes and completes own assignments efficiently and appropriately.

Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of interdisciplinary care. Engages patients, families, and other caregivers to incorporate their knowledge, values, and beliefs into care planning without judgment or discrimination. Maintains knowledge of ethical issues related to professional nursing practice; follows established policies of the practice setting, VA, and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.

Applies awareness of high reliability principles to deliver consistent care and improve patient outcomes. Demonstrates positive, effective communication skills and professional behaviors that promote cooperation and teamwork with internal and external customers. Participates in unit-based educational activities and continuing education requirements. Handles conflicts and problems with any consumer group appropriately and constructively.

Protects data from unauthorized release, loss, alteration, or deletion. Follows regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files and release of access codes per signed computer access agreement. Maintains flexibility in schedule and assignments as required by the position.
