Job Summary

The Registered Nurse Emergency department delivers fundamental knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical skills. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.

The RN ED influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

The Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care. They delegate and supervise basic nursing care of licensed practical nurses and unlicensed assistive personnel. Provides urgent and emergent care to patients with acute and or chronic medical, surgical and psychiatric conditions.

Nursing care ranges from basic nursing care to stabilization, resuscitation, and life-support measures. The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. Ability to formulate a plan of care based on nursing assessments. Seeks guidance in how to improve care provided to patients and families. The nurse brings principles and theory with limited application of critical thinking skills.

The ED RN is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing care. They assess the patient by collecting pertinent date or information, including the triage of patients based on the five-level triage system to prioritize patients that require more immediate care. They use assessment date to determine diagnoses, problems, or other concerns.

The RN will identify expected outcomes to develop collaborative and individualized plan for each patient. The ED RN will implement the plan, including care, coordination, health teaching, and health promotion. The RN evaluates the progress toward achieving the expected goal and outcomes and adjusts the plan as necessary.
