Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include but not limited to: Supports the Nurse Manager with the operation of their designated unit(s). Provides coverage for other ANMs as needed. Responsible and accountable for the direction and oversight of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance. Functions as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader.

Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based cutting-edge programs/processes.

Exercises the authority to direct work, assign duties, evaluate employee performance, recommend employee awards, approve or deny leave, recall employees to duty, propose discipline, and to adjust their grievances, or to effectively recommend such proposed discipline or grievance adjustments for employees under their direct supervision.

Serves as the first line supervisor of nursing personnel in the patient care area ensuring the head nurse/NM retains VA Handbook 5007 requirements. Approve schedules and leave of employees under their direct supervision. Appraises performance, recommending performance standards, and recommending performance awards for employees under their direct supervision. Serves as hiring official during recruitment process for employees under their direct supervision.

Recommends proposed discipline or grievance adjustments for employees under their direct supervision. Assists drafting schedules and leave final approval by the NM. Assist with making recommendations for selection of candidates for employment. Applies clinical knowledge/judgement to lead staff involvement in planning, decision making, and evaluating outcomes.

Provides feedback to the NM who ultimately ensures nursing personnel provide timely nursing care that complies with generally accepted standards of practice. Assists in overseeing work assignments and providing reports of contact or assisting with fact findings as needed to provide the NM with the information necessary to make recommendations for counseling and/or disciplinary actions. Engages in professional organizations to enhance leadership and career growth.

Adheres to ethical principles in decision making, fostering accountability at personal organizational, and staff levels. Equips staff with tools for competent care and promotes an environment of accountability for high quality, cost effective outcomes. Promotes alliances across the care continuum, building trust through active listening, engagement, and emotional intelligence.

Contributes to the development of care delivery models and environmental design, ensuring evidence based, accessible, affordable, and equitable patient care. Ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards. Aligns nursing/clinical objectives with organizational strategic outcomes, participating in strategy planning and execution. Promotes a workplace positively to achieve the organizations vision and mission.

Maintains knowledge and ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards, directives, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOP).
