The Operations Service at the Richmond VA Medical Center is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for the Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) position.
The Registered Nurse (RN) Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) functions to deliver and coordinate safe, efficient, and effective patient care throughout all areas of the facility.
The incumbent provides care and directs others in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems. He or she executes medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise authorized provider.
The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group or community and the facility. Duties include but not limited to: Direct position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex patient care. Demonstrate the ability to plan and organize the delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
Skill in the delivery of patient care and serves as the facility nursing expert at all hours to support, provide and facilitate emergency medical support throughout the facility. Serve as the facility expert for all patient care areas in identifying escalating medical crises, environmental factors, and in allocating staffing resources appropriately throughout the facility to meet the care needs of Veterans.
Use clinical knowledge and judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes. Function proficiently in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities. Evaluate current practice and formulates outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise.
Guide, develop, and support staff from a leadership perspective using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. Demonstrate advanced leadership at the systems level that is sustainable, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex situations.
Assume authority, responsibility, and accountability for managing and directing employees, staffing units, and allocating resources as necessary during weekends, holidays, and after-hours tours during the absence of nursing management/leadership. Responsible for rounding and is a consultant to providers.
Collaborate with the Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD) and other members of the interdisciplinary team as needed for decisions related to on-going patient care and actions taken in emergency situations and disasters. Provides programmatic outcomes to nursing leadership to assist with improving organizational processes and the delivery of patient care.
