Job Summary

There is full-time Ambulatory Surgery Registered Nurse (RN) position located at the Milo C. Huempfner Health Care Center in Green Bay, WI. (http://www.milwaukee.va.gov/locations/green_bay.asp). The RN provides comprehensive perioperative care across per-operative, intraoperative, and post-anesthesia phases for patients undergoing surgical/invasive procedures in an ambulatory setting.

Key Responsibilities

Preoperative Phase Patient Assessment: Review medical history, allergies, lab results, and consent forms. Education: Explain the procedure, anesthesia, and postoperative expectations to the patient and family. Answer patient/family questions. Consult with anesthesia/provider team to ensure patient and family learning. Preparation: Ensure the patient is properly prepped (skin cleansing, positioning, marking surgical site).

Verification: Participate in the surgical safety checklist (time-out procedure). Intraoperative Phase Scrub Nurse Duties: Prepare and maintain the sterile field, handle instruments, and assist the provider. Circulating Nurse Duties: Manage the OR environment, retrieve supplies, document the procedure, and advocate for the patient. Safety Monitoring: Ensure aseptic technique, count instruments/sponges, and monitor patient positioning to prevent injury.

Postoperative Phase Immediate Recovery: Transfer patient to PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit), monitor vital signs, airway, and pain. Documentation: Record intraoperative events, medications, and patient status. Communication: Provide handoff report to PACU nurses and update family members.

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), located at 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326.

The ACEN accredits all levels of nursing programs, including clinical doctorate, masters/post master's certificate, baccalaureate, associate and diploma nursing education programs. (Note: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission/NLNAC changed its name to ACEN in May 2013.

ACEN's website may be utilized to verify accredited programs using automated inquiry processes; however, for verification of any nursing program's accreditation prior to 1998, an automated inquiry cannot be used and ACEN must be contacted directly via their email contact information on the ACEN website to verify.) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), located at 655 K Street, NW, Suite 7, Washington, DC 20001.

The CCNE is an accrediting arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and accredits nursing education programs at the bachelor and master's level.
