Job Summary

Manages a facility Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) Program based on the requirements of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Directive 1611, covering all medical facilities and clinics within the healthcare system. This is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for the SPHM Program, which crosses the lines of all services and disciplines that influence the organizational healthcare mission.

Key Responsibilities

The Nurse SPHM Program Manager (PM) Expert Registered Nurse (RN) executes position responsibilities that demonstrate mastery of leadership, extensive experience, and a depth of understanding of how to manage complex situations holistically. They have an intuitive grasp of the SPHM program demonstrating creative approaches to function as an advisor, administrator, educator, consultant, and mentor with a wide range of experience and leadership abilities.

The SPHM program is implemented in every Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Facility and SPHM technology be incorporated as appropriate in the planning, design, and construction of new construction and renovation projects, to protect VHA healthcare workers and Veterans from injuries due to patient handling and mobility, ensure that all Veterans have an equitable opportunity to access SPHM technology, as needed, and to meet and improve Veteran care needs.

The SPHM PM promotes a HRO with safety founded on a systems approach to developing evidence-based healthcare solutions based on a commitment to zero harm by developing strong safety principles through injury prevention supported by engaged leadership. The SPHM PM collaborates with stakeholders across the healthcare system continuum, including other program and service leaders at the facility and network.

They work closely to establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of VA staff within the healthcare system. The SPHM PM effectively relates with customers, families, and the community, as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels. The SPHM PM contributes ideas and recommendations for establishing standards of care, policies, and objectives for enhancing the healthcare system.

Physical requirements to perform essential functions of this job, considering physical, mental, and emotional capacities, without endangering their safety and health or co-workers' safety and health, are in the VA Directive 5019 and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health (EOH) Service.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: MSN preferred; 5 years Acute Care experience, 2 years Critical Care or Rehabilitation nursing, worked as a SPHM Coordinator or project manager for related equipment program.
