The Specialty Care Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse (RN) is is a clinical expert who uses advanced specialized knowledge and judgement for delivery of high quality and evidence based care to oncology patients and their families.
The Specialty Care Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse (RN) provides a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs mission. The RN duties include but are not limited to: Ability to formulate a plan of care based on nursing assessments and Veteran goals of care. Delegates elements of care to the appropriate individual based upon assessed needs. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Assists in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation and competencies. Evaluates practice in an ongoing process, based on evidence. Provides professional nursing perspective in discussions with the interdisciplinary team. Shares educational findings, experiences and ideas with peers. Questions clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence-based care. Serves an advocate for patients, families, caregivers and staff, improving outcomes for the immediate practice setting. Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years of recent professional nursing experience in Oncology, Hematology and/or Infusion Therapy. BSN preferred. ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate and/or Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) credential preferred. Experience administering antineoplastic/non-neoplastic infusions. Handle hazardous medications safely in accordance with established guidelines (e.g., OSHA, ONS). Knowledge of safe handling and disposal of hazardous drugs and medical waste, maintain compliance with infection control and safety standards. Demonstrate proficiency in managing central and peripheral venous access devices, including initiation, monitoring and troubleshooting Ability to practice cooperative and professional interpersonal communications with co-workers, patients and patient family members. Ability to work with patients exhibiting a variety of physical and behavioral problems. Ability to collect and record a variety of patient data in a computer-based electronic medical record system. Ability to perform direct nursing care in compliance with organizational standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Educate patients and caregivers regarding oncology treatments, potential side effects and home care instructions. Identify prevent and manage infusion reactions and disease-related or treatment-related symptoms Skilled telephone skills for talking with patients and families and coordinating care with other departments and facilities.
