Job Summary

The VA New Jersey VA Healthcare System is hiring for a Day/Night Registered Nurse (RN) - Staff Nurse to join our Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the East Orange medical center location. The RN will provide specialized, 24 hour care to patient with spinal cord injuries and disorders, focusing on stabilizing acute injuries, preventing complications, managing neurogenic bowel/bladder dysfunction, and facilitating rehabilitation for improved mobility.

Key Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse (RN) - Spinal Cord Staff Nurse is responsible for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. He/she administers medications and procedures per established policies, guidelines, and influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.

Spinal Cord Injury Staff Nurses educate families, manage wound care and autonomic dysreflexia, and coordinate care across multidisciplinary teams to promote independence and long term quality of life.

The incumbent will work closely with the caregivers and support personnel for patients, and provide education on injury and disorder management, long term care needs, psychosocial adjustment to injury, and coordinate with the entire care team to prepare for discharge and homecare needs.

Duties to include, but are not limited to: Provide competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. Assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation.

Contribute professional nursing perspective in discussions with the interdisciplinary team, and partner with others to effect change and produce optimal outcomes. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care based on age-specific and injury components. Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influence care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Work Schedule: Full-Time.
