Job Summary

The Surgery Clinical Resource Nurse (CRN) is a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Outpatient Surgery Unit, Operating Room (OR) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) who provides care and counseling for the patient undergoing surgery and invasive procedures. The CRN is a professional nurse with a broad based clinical knowledge that enables him/her to effectively provide peri-operative nursing care to a Veteran population with widely diverse diagnoses and symptoms.

Key Responsibilities

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Responsible & accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/o9r supervising direct patient care. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.

Utilizes the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgement, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to o restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or other wise legally authorized provider.

Manages & coordinates staff education and competencies in these areas (peri-operative) and is primarily responsible and accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating this education. Assists all new staff with orientation and ensures competencies are addressed. Participates in Quality Improvement projects to improve patient care.

Ensures all new equipment has instructions for use available and will lead education on all equipment for the department, retraining staff as needed. Assesses and evaluates patient care processes for effectiveness, initiation process changes when indicated. Follows & monitors staff compliance with safe work practices and procedures provides education and re-direction where needed.
