Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) IV - Associate Chief Nurse (ACN) for Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) provides nursing leadership and oversight for the Community Living Centers (CLC) at the Tomah VA Medical Center. The ACN has substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for CLC nursing operations, quality/safety, staffing, clinical practice, and Veteran-centered care.

Scope of practice is defined in the dimensions of the Nurse Qualifications and is specific to the Nurse IV grade.

Key Responsibilities

THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION! The Registered Nurse (RN) IV - Associate Chief Nurse (ACN) for Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) functions as an advisor, administrator, educator, consultant, and mentor who possesses a wide range of experience and leadership ability. The person in this role provides senior leadership and oversight for the Community Living Centers (CLCs).

The ACN is responsible for the clinical and administrative operations of CLC nursing and reports to the Deputy Associate Director for Patient Care Services (Deputy ADPCS). The RN IV - ACN GEC is also responsible for the following duties: Ensuring the delivery of nursing care to Veteran patients and managing nursing personnel the Community Living Center (CLC).

Collaborating with interdisciplinary leaders in the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of CLC programs and services, including long-term care, short-stay rehabilitation, dementia care, and hospice/palliative care. Efficiently and effectively managing resources within the CLC. Assessing and recommending the allocations of human and material resources, in determining staffing levels, managing overtime, and recruitment and retention of nursing staff.

Supporting the integration and collaboration of nursing with other professional disciplines and functional areas in the mutual achievement of patient-centered and organizational goals. Championing a High Reliability Organization (HRO) with a lifestyle of safety founded on a systems approach to developing evidence-based health care solutions based on prevention, not punishment, with collective mindfulness.

Fostering a climate for practice that enhances job satisfaction through mutual responsibility for productivity and quality improvement. Working closely to establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of Veteran Affairs (VA) staff nationwide. Relating effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels.

Assisting the DADPCS with healthcare operations and the functions and activities expected of them. Contributing ideas and recommendations for the establishment of standards of care, policies, and objectives for the enhancement of nursing. Ensuring the CLC program follows statutory law, accrediting organizations, and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) regulations, policies, and procedures. Other duties, as assigned by the DADPCS.

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), located at 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326.

The ACEN accredits all levels of nursing programs, including clinical doctorate, masters/post master's certificate, baccalaureate, associate and diploma nursing education programs. (Note: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission/NLNAC changed its name to ACEN in May 2013.

ACEN's website may be utilized to verify accredited programs using automated inquiry processes; however, for verification of any nursing program's accreditation prior to 1998, an automated inquiry cannot be used and ACEN must be contacted directly via their email contact information on the ACEN website to verify.) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), located at 655 K Street, NW, Suite 7, Washington, DC 20001.

The CCNE is an accrediting arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and accredits nursing education programs at the bachelor and master's level.
