Job Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Safety Division of the Office of Protection Services (OPS) and is responsible for occupational safety, fire protection, and health compliance across the Smithsonian Institution (SI).

Key Responsibilities

The Safety and Occupational Health Manager is responsible for developing, planning, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive occupational safety program. In this position, you will: GS-12 Serve as a technical expert in safety and occupational health, providing technical information and support for the planning, implementation, administration, and audit/evaluation of the safety and health program.

Participate in the development, implementation, and management of institution wide training programs using various delivery systems including web-based training. Act as safety liaison for assigned museums/research centers/leased or owned facilities/programs, providing technical advice, support, and assistance to safety coordinators at these locations.

Prepare reports from the automated safety and health data base to track trends, conduct analyses, and determine needed improvements to the safety and health progr am. GS-13 Serve as a technical advisor and coordinator on the application and review aspects of the SI safety program. Develop and present safety training programs curriculum, adapting various regulations and codes to the museum community.

Provide technical consulting services to all organizational elements of the SI including senior management officials, as well as other museum facilities nationwide and throughout the world. Investigate accidents, analyze root causes, and recommend corrective actions by applying applicable codes, standards, and regulations to the specific circumstances of each incident.
