This position is within the FAA, Aviation Safety (AVS), Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), Aerospace Medical Certification Division (AAM-300), Medical Review & Appeals Branch (AAM-310), Review, Qualifications, & Evaluation Section B. The Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) develops and manages medical programs in support of Aviation Safety.
Serves as the front line manager in the AAM-310 Medical Review and Appeals Branch. The work of the front line manager directly impacts the Aerospace Medical Certificate Division CAMI, AAM, AVS, and the mission of the FAA. Supervises and oversees the operation of subordinate employees including defining, planning, organizing assigned staff and other resources to accomplish division objectives, goals, and priorities.
Work usually includes a mixture of routine and complex projects/programs to accomplish the organizations objectives and major subdivisions/LOB/SO.
Performs managerial duties which typically includes planning, communicating the organization's vision, goals and objectives, setting priorities, assigning tasks/responsibilities, monitoring/evaluating performance, coaching, developing employee capabilities, approving leave, recommending/approving corrective/disciplinary actions as appropriate.
Applies an advanced knowledge of the technical aspects of work directed, budget, human resource management, and other administrative policies and procedures and an advanced understanding of AMCD objectives. Provides assistance to higher level management on medical certification/examination processes, systems and physical examination (PE) records, technical and legal aspects of PE reports, program quality, and medical statistics.
Represents higher management in the certification matters by serving as principle advisor and consultant. External contacts are typically with stakeholders and other external parties on complex matters such as explaining Code of Federal Aviation Regulations (CFAR) and Office of Aviation Medicine Policies. Serves as key advisor in interpreting the CFAR to Aviation Medical Examiner (AMEs) as well as airmen.
Advises airmen on their appeal rights as appropriate/acts as advisor to regional medical offices in all aspects of processing medical certification cases. Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments but allow considerable discretion to select the most appropriate approach. Resolves all but unique problems without intervention of higher-level management.
Regularly called upon to identify problem areas and to develop/recommend new policies and procedures for resolutions. Navigates activities that have a direct impact on projects and program objectives for more than one organizational unit and major subdivision that frequently affects the major subdivisions internal and external customers. Has discretion to ensure the alignment of projects and programs with the tactical (short-term) objectives of the major subdivisions.
Executes assignments that include: interpreting medical records, ensuring sufficient medical data is available to substantiate denial or issuance of medical certifications or other appropriate actions, assisting in developing and maintaining systems for the Document Imaging Workflow System (DIWS). Must have a solid understanding of how work activities contribute to the objectives of the organizational unit, major subdivisions and the Aerospace Medicines LOB.
The duties are typically governed by established policies, procedures, and organizational objectives that frequently leave room for discretion. Carries out a variety of special, often sensitive information and assignments.
