Job Summary

The Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist serves under the general direction of the Chief of Staff and the Associate Chief of Staff, Diagnostic Service, assisting and overseeing plans and developmental activities of the Radiology department as it refers to Nuclear Medicine and Medical Instrument Technicians (Ultrasound and Echocardiography) to ensure optimum patient care, quality control, and the economically efficient performance of all activities.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to: Performs radiologic procedures in incumbent's area of licensure/certification (nuclear medicine) when staffing levels require the incumbent to do so to ensure that patient care is continued without delay or interruption. Provides direct supervision to Nuclear Medicine technologists and Medical Instrument Technicians (Ultrasound and Echocardiography) within the Diagnostic Service within the Saginaw VAMC.

Formulates training for new and existing staff, ensures competencies are completed timely and recorded appropriately, and structures work assignments for staff under their supervision.

The incumbent directs the Radiology quality improvement program by establishing quality assurance guidelines, performance improvement, and quality management reports to continuously improve the quality of the interdepartmental activities and optimum patient quality care and quality control as it pertains to Radiology. Motivates, encourages, and directs employees to produce optimum performance on a daily basis.

Properly documents any excessive radiation exposure; to analyze instances of increased radiation exposure levels and recommend reduction measures. Serves as a subject matter expert for all department medical center memoranda policies, service guidelines, VHA directives and subsequent SOPs, and procedure manual regarding radiology consistent with Central Office, VISN 10, and Veterans Affairs Publications. Ensures policy and or procedures are updated as needed.

Collaborates with department heads, local and distant VAMC staff, radiologists and other customers both internal and external. Serves as a subject matter expert and direct point of contact to solve interdepartmental problems. Serves as faculty advisor to educational affiliates and plays a major role in constructing the externship portion of student clinical training within the VAMC Medical Instrument Technicians (Ultrasound and Echocardiography) and Nuclear Medicine programs.
