This position is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), Ambulance Service, in various VA Medical Center (VAMC) locations with an emergency room, acute care or urgent care clinic, or other similar departments performing basic and advanced life support procedures. This position performs technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services).
Supervisory Duties Oversee/monitor all aspects of the Ambulance Services Program (ASP). Evaluates procedures/techniques of patient care for compliance with emergency medical service protocols. Plans the work of the ASP employees, setting and adjusting both short and long-term priorities and goals. Takes corrective action to improve the quality and quantity of work and resolves problems not covered by precedents or established policies related to Ambulance Services.
Incumbent ensures the operation of an effective system of internal controls by periodically reviewing internal control measures, initiating needed revisions, and evaluates procedures/techniques of patient care for compliance with emergency medical services protocols. Interviews candidates for ASP positions and recommends appointment, promotion, or reassignment to such positions.
Observes workers' performance, develops performance standards, and conducts work performance critiques related to the performance of Ambulance Services. Provides informal feedback and performance evaluations for all ASP subordinates. Incumbent resolves formal and informal complaints not directed towards themselves. Prepares and recommends awards or bonuses for subordinate positions and changes in position classification.
Develops work improvement plans related to Ambulance Service personnel and effects routine disciplinary measures as necessary. Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters concerning the ASP. Assures that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the Department of Veterans Affairs Emergency Medical Services and Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician training programs.
Act as a liaison to the EMS community and Ambulance Service Program Medical Director, and track ambulance transport statistics. Paramedic Duties: Responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening. Determines and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance.

Determines, with due regard to the patient's condition, if and how the patient can be moved and to which medical facility the patient should be transported. Prioritizes treatments for patients having multiple problems and employs a variety of advanced emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment during transport to the appropriate medical facility.
Administers basic and advanced life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), international trauma life support (ITLS), PALS, PEPP, advanced airway management, CPR, and/or drug treatments. Performs invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and non-life-threatening conditions per established procedures or as authorized/directed by physicians.
Responds to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, performs cardiac monitoring and defibrillation; maintains circulation controls bleeding and provides spinal management and immobilization. Provides fluid resuscitation by IV and manages trauma injuries, bleeding, and post-traumatic shock. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Takes appropriate measures to prevent disease transmission or exposure to bodily fluids. DCVAMC Ambulance Interpretive Guidelines Paramedic Minimum Psychomotor Skill Set Ambulance/Transport Vehicle Operation: Selects the most efficient route to and from sites, taking into consideration traffic patterns, health facility locations, etc. Operates the emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systems.
Read highway maps, program GPS devices, read and follow instructions in order to locate and complete assigned tasks. Adheres to traffic ordinances and regulations pertaining to operation of emergency vehicles. Supervisory Paramedics will perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Supervisory Paramedics may work rotating shifts, including holidays, and are subject to occasional recall to maintain adequate coverage of the Emergency Department and ambulance service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mandatory overtime may be required due to run times that may extend beyond normal scheduled work hours. Initial schedule Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 4:00pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
