This position is in the Physical Therapy Section within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) at the Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN (a Complexity Level 1a facility).
The incumbent is a licensed physical therapist and a graduate from an accredited physical therapy program approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) and meets all requirements listed in qualification standards for GS-13 Physical Therapist (Supervisory).
Duties of the Supervisory Physical Therapist: Spends up to 25% of time providing supervision of staff and program oversight within the Physical Therapy Section of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS).
In collaboration with the Chief, Physical Therapy Section, is responsible for supervision, administrative management, and direction of physical therapy staff assigned to the Acute Inpatient Units (Medical-Surgical, Intensive Care/Step Down, and Inpatient Psychiatric Units) and the Acute Rehabilitation Unit. Provides oversight of key clinical and training programs, including technical oversight of assigned staff.
Supervisory physical therapists develop and implement policies and procedures to address clinical needs and ensure quality of services within the section. Demonstrates autonomy in supervisory authority including assigning work, monitoring workload and clinical volume, reviewing staff work for accuracy, ensuring adequate clinical coverage, administering disciplinary actions when necessary, and monitoring clinical privileges.
They are responsible for ensuring coordinated, high-quality care across the service and facility. In collaboration with the Chief, Physical Therapy Section, plans, develops, and implements short- and long-term goals and objectives as part of strategic planning to ensure the provision of quality rehabilitative services to meet the needs of the patient population served across the Acute Inpatient Units and Acute Rehabilitation Unit.
Assists with strategic planning for staffing and equipment/space procurement for these areas, recommends solutions for staffing needs, and takes responsibility for implementation. Ensures day-to-day operations run smoothly and efficiently across assigned units in the absence of the Chief, Physical Therapy Section, serving as a point of continuity for administrative and clinical oversight.
Provides direct clinical care at least 75% of the time, applying advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities in professional physical therapy practice to evaluate and treat patients referred to the Physical Therapy Section of PM&R. As an inpatient physical therapist, competent in the screening, examination, evaluation, and treatment of all Veterans referred to Acute Inpatient and Acute Rehabilitation Physical Therapy Services.
Clinical assignments may also include other inpatient specialty areas such as Acute Neurologic Rehabilitation and Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder, as operational needs require. Physical therapists utilize differential and movement diagnoses to examine individuals with actual or potential impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions involving the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and integumentary systems.
Interpret examination findings and diagnostic tests, select appropriate tests and measures, and incorporate results into a comprehensive plan of care for a diverse patient population. Establishes a physical therapy diagnosis and identifies appropriate interventions or referrals to other providers.
Determine the physical therapy prognosis based on examination findings and patient-identified functional goals, establish clinically appropriate treatment objectives, and optimize functional outcomes. Select and recommend equipment to support or compensate for functional limitations and practice autonomously, making clinically indicated recommendations and referrals to other medical specialties throughout the course of patient care.
