Job Summary

This position is assigned to the Grounds Section in the Facilities Management Service (FMS). This section is responsible for fulfilling all grounds maintenance and snow removal needs in support of the Saginaw VA Medical Center. Incumbent receives work assignments from and is under the supervision of Grounds Supervisor, Facilities Management Service or in his absence the work leader.

Key Responsibilities

The duties of the Tractor Operator includes but are not limited to: Tractor & Equipment Operation Uses various power mowers to cut grass including tractors with mower attachments; adjusts blades and cleans and oils mowers. Operates 172 HP heavy, 28,000+ LB Loader with several attachments controlled by hydraulics and complex electronic controls Cut down trees and uses a manlift for tree trimming and banner placement on light poles.

Uses various hand tools including an axe; shovels snow by hand; rakes leaves, waters and weeds grass, picks up trash, cleans around dumpsters, and performs general cleaning duties of entrance areas to the hospital. Incumbent is required to work snow removal during and after work hours, weekends, and holidays as weather conditions require.

General Maintenance Incumbent maintains and repairs all outside grounds equipment including large front-end loader, tractors, mowers, trimmers, spreaders, sprayers, portable generator, concreate saw, mason saw, chain saws, as required. Incumbent sharpens rotary lawn mower blades, chainsaw chains, and is responsible for the proper use of lawn mowers. Incumbent builds concrete forms for small, poured retaining walls, and manhole forms.

Incumbent operates core saw for pole placement and other applications in impermeable surfaces. Incumbent performs any other duties relating to ground maintenance as assigned by supervisor or Work Leader. Incumbent cleans and maintains ambulance bay. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties involving the maintenance and up-keep of the grounds surrounding the Medical Center.

Typical assignments include mowing lawns and wooded areas, pruning and trimming of trees and bushes, planting and developing and creating landscape areas and flower beds as well as removal of debris, grass, limbs, and other trash, and snow removal. The incumbent receives assignments from the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor or Work leader, orally or in writing, outlining the work to be done and the specific methods and equipment to be used in accomplishing the tasks assigned.

Incumbent works either individually or with a group. The incumbent must have working knowledge of the tools used for safe operation in the moving, cultivating and grounds work, and general knowledge concerning snow removal and de-icing, installing and maintaining paver and brick patios, and repairing and installing retaining walls using landscape brick and concrete.

The incumbent shall perform ground maintenance activities using all types of hand tools like shovels and rakes including push mowers and power equipment. The incumbent is responsible for operator-level maintenance of all equipment to be used (pre-operation and post-operation checks). The incumbent must be able to read and understand equipment manuals and other written instructions.

Incumbents shall conduct daily police calls of the grounds including trash from all receptacles at least twice a day (7:30 am and 2 pm). Incumbents have knowledge of decorative and ornamental plant needs, proper trimming, and nutrients required to make them prosper. Incumbents shall respond to callbacks within reasonable timeframes for snow removal, this includes nights, holidays, and weekends.

Incumbent may be placed in an "on call" status during the winter months for snow removal, a phone will be provided. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday; 06:00am-04:30pm. Schedule may be subject to change based on the needs of the Agency.
