This vacancy is for aWG-3703-10, Welder located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION FACILITY PORTSMOUTH in PORTSMOUTH, Virginia.
You will serve as a Welder and be responsible for work on Lighthouses, aids to navigation (ATON), barges, boats, ships and small vessels and their associated equipment. Selectee welds the various components of a ship including the shell, broken or cracked engine parts, framing, inner bottoms, tanks, boilers, decks, bulkheads, superstructures, masts, stacks, ventilation ducts, railings, Class I piping and similar components.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Welding work frequently involves removing and replacing interferences in way of welds, fitting brackets and machinery foundations and fitting minor structural braces, gussets or patches. Taking all fire and safety precautions, adjusting all welding controls to insure that qualified welding procedures are maintained.
Applying knowledge of a wide range of manual welding processes and difficult welds using processes such as oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen, and other industrial gases. Working with various methods such as gas metal-arc, gas tungsten-arc, gas carbon-arc, plasma-arc, and shielded metal arc welding.
Selectee must have knowledge of welding standards and how various metals and alloys, such as different kinds of steel, aluminum, cast iron, nickel, Monet metal, brass, copper, bronze and titanium, react to different welding processes and techniques. Reading blueprints, sketches, online drawings, and is capable of component layout and fit up as diagramed.
