The Advanced Practice Nurse (CNP) Breast Imaging (NP) The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Breast Imaging Nurse Practitioner (BINP) provides a full range of sex specific services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. BINP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management.
Major duties and responsibilities of the position: include, but are not limited to the following: Demonstrates critical thinking, creativity and versatility in handling complex situations and problem solving. Reflects leadership skills and attributes, reviewing traditional practices, supporting fellow staff members to search for evidence-based practices and bring findings to the attention of the unit.
Teaches others to critically think by verbally expressing rationale for decisions and following up by coaching and critiquing colleagues' thought processes in complex situations. Follows the nursing process, modifies care based on continuous evaluation of the patient's condition, demonstrates clinical problem-solving and critical thinking, and makes decisions using evidence-based analytical approach.
Plans for routine events and anticipates/prevents and manages/elevates emergent situations. Contributes to meeting departmental targets for quality and safety measures on unit-based scorecard. Obtains and coordinates outside medical records, including breast imaging reports, pathology reports, consultation notes, operative reports, and other pertinent clinical documentation required for patient care. Coordinates acquisition, transfer (i.e.
transfer to and from our facility), and review of outside as well as MEDVAMC breast imaging studies and associated images to ensure availability for comparison and interpretation by Breast Imaging Radiologists Maintains a comprehensive patient tracking system to ensure Veterans with abnormal breast imaging findings receive timely and appropriate follow-up care.
Tracks Veterans throughout the breast imaging continuum, including completion of recommended diagnostic imaging, image-guided breast biopsies, breast MRI examinations, contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM), genetic counseling consultations, surgical oncology consultations, medical oncology consultations, and other clinically indicated services.
Communicates and coordinates care with Veterans, Primary Care Providers, Community Care staff, radiologists, surgeons, oncologists, genetic counselors, and other interdisciplinary team members. Reviews outside breast imaging reports and enters appropriate Bl-RADS assessment categories into the radiology information system (i.e. radiology package) in accordance with Breast Imaging Section protocols.
Maintains accurate tracking databases, follow-up logs, and documentation systems to support quality assurance, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. Assists with monitoring and reporting of breast imaging quality metrics and follow-up compliance measures. Provides nursing support before, during, and after image-guided breast procedures, including breast biopsies and localization procedures.
Performs patient assessment, education, and procedural preparation for breast imaging examinations and image-guided procedures. Follows up with patients post procedures and documents patient status in the medical record system. Establishes peripheral intravenous access as clinically indicated for contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) and breast MRI examinations in accordance with facility policy.
Monitors patients for adverse reactions, procedural complications, and post procedure recovery needs and provides appropriate nursing interventions and education.
