Job Summary

NIST is seeking a Quantum Information Scientist specializing in atomic ions to join the Laser Cooling and Trapping Group within the Quantum Measurement Division. This role focuses on quantum computation and simulation using trapped atomic ions. This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

Key Responsibilities

As an Atomic Ion Quantum Information Scientist, you will lead research in quantum computation and quantum simulation using trapped atomic ions. The Candidate will: Develop methods to trap ions that reduce decoherence and increase their lifetime. Conduct research on quantum computation and simulation with arrays of trapped ions. Utilize bosonic phonon modes as computational resources. Provide technical leadership in formulating research solutions.

Design and conduct experiments that involve ion motion and controlled noise to investigate quantum error correction, open quantum systems, energy transfer, and field theories.

Requirements & Education

This position has an education requirement. Transcripts must be submitted to validate that the education requirement has been met. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package. An accredited organization must evaluate education completed outside of the U.S.
