Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administartion (VHA) Veterans integrated Service Network 6 (VISN 6), at the Durham VA Health Care System (VAHCS) in Durham, North Carolina, within the Area Maintenance Section of Facilities Management Service. This position reports directly to the manager of the Carpentery Section (i.e. a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor)

Key Responsibilities

Duties include but not limited too: The incumbent performs general maintenance and repair pertaining to be carpenter trade throughout the VA Medical Center. This includes inside and outside repairs to the building, alterations, and minor improvement projects.

Incumbent installs floor tile requiring material for adhesion, repairs and replaces window guides and tapes, cuts and replaces different size window glass, installs detention screens, acoustical ceiling suspension systems, metal stud walls, partitions and carpet. Setting up and operating a wide variety of wood working machines and tools.

Constructing, installing, repairing and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. Incumbent performs preventive maintenance of buildings and makes necessary repairs as a result of these inspections. Incumbent installs and repairs locks, hardware, door closures, and security combination locks such as push button and safes. Incumbent is required to re-key lock cylinders, duplicate and make new keys.

Incumbent is required to repair and troubleshoot automatic doors, which includes reading schematics and installation of parts. Incumbent is responsible for the VA Medical Center lock system and maintains all key codes and door hardware, repairs and maintains automatic doors and installs fire protection door closures on all smoke doors thought out the Medical Center.

Incumbent will be required to be able to used machinery and tools Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:30am to 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD50174A Physical Requirements: The employee performs tasks normally requiring moderate physical exertion, including frequent medium lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces.

Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent will require the ability to work in a variety of work sites, including, roofs, scaffolds, crawl spaces, ladders, etc. The employee must be able to distinguish colors. The employee is standing or walking most of the time.

Some work is performed in shop areas where the worker is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. When working at job sites, workers may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. They are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions.

Carpentry workers may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The employee uses protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
