The incumbent will function as a Carpenter for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) and is located within Engineering Service, Maintenance and Operations Section.
Major Duties: Erects construction barriers, remodels offices, and removes and/or erects new walls. Installs drywall, door jambs, and door hardware. Lowers ceiling tiles and supporting metal grid. Removes existing floor coverings and installs the specified new floor covering and cove base materials. Cuts tile to accommodate irregular angles and measurements.
Reviews all work in-progress and upon completion to ensure structural integrity, that trade standards are met, and compliance with required measurements. Determines type and quantity of materials required for various remodeling and construction projects. Utilizes shop mathematics to determine required arc and circle measurements for more complex projects.
Based on judgment and knowledge of carpentry trade, advises team lead of appropriate wall, ceiling, and floor layouts for installation of new offices or modifications of existing office dimensions. Incumbent sets up and dismantles scaffolding and ladders as needed to accomplish assigned work.
Completes work order requests for installation of various maintenance mechanic duties such as installing items on wall using appropriate anchors and screws; items include bulletin boards, glove boxes, sharps containers, paper towel and tissue dispensers, soap and lotion dispensers, framed items such as pictures and plaques Fabricates and installs/hangs counter tops, wall shelving, and cabinets, ensuring that the shelving, cabinets, and wall can safely support the anticipated loads Accomplishes preventive maintenance and inspection tasks of the building maintenance program by inspecting and repairing all wall, ceiling and floor assemblies that are part of the fire and smoke-rated assemblies.
Prepares and finishes a variety of surfaces to include walls, metallic door bumpers, door handles, parking lots, and street curbs. As necessary, mixes base paint with hardener at specified ratio to obtain an epoxy finish.
