Job Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Key Responsibilities

The CLS serves as a recognized expert and provides consultative services to management at all levels of the organization advising on various aspects of specialized testing, coordinating VISN or multi-facility specialized services including, but not limited to, quality management or laboratory information management (this list is not all-inclusive).

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Surgical Pathology Coordination & Operations Serve as a recognized expert in Surgical Pathology, independently and collaboratively coordinating daily operations across multiple facilities within the VISN, ensuring high-quality, efficient, and compliant pathology services.

Adapt traditional and advanced diagnostic methods to handle complex, unique, or unknown cases, leveraging a thorough understanding of gross pathology and laboratory techniques. Participate in tissue specimen processing, accessioning, grossing, intraoperative frozen section procedures, and autopsy activities, ensuring specimen integrity and adherence to accreditation standards.

Lead workflow orchestration, design and implement process improvements, evaluate outcomes, and drive re-engineering initiatives to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency. Evaluate and resolve unacceptable or problematic specimens, prioritizing tissue processing to support timely patient care while balancing educational and training missions.

Examine and describe gross surgical specimens, identify abnormalities, and select appropriate sections for microscopic examination, diagnosis, and staging, providing consultative support on complex cases. Order or perform special procedures (e.g., special stains, flow cytometry, photography), maintain teaching collections, and resolve pathology-related operational issues, contributing to continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Medical & Continuing Education Lead and participate in the education and training of residents, medical students, technologists, and technicians in Surgical and Autopsy Pathology, fostering expertise and compliance with best practices. Develop and adapt educational materials, organize resident rotation goals, and instruct on specimen examination, dissection, sampling, and processing techniques, ensuring alignment with organizational standards and accreditation requirements.

Represent Pathology in interdisciplinary conferences, presenting autopsy and surgical pathology cases, and collaborating with clinical teams to enhance diagnostic accuracy and clinical integration. Provide education to healthcare workers outside of Anatomic Pathology regarding specimen handling, testing protocols, and quality standards.

Anatomic Pathology Protocol Development Maintain, develop, and revise pathology protocols to incorporate emerging technologies and best practices, ensuring compliance with accreditation and regulatory agencies. Monitor laboratory service quality, identify deficiencies, and recommend or implement corrective actions and process improvements to optimize patient care and operational efficiency.

Lead or contribute to multi-facility or VISN-wide specialized service coordination, ensuring consistency, quality, and compliance across sites. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
