The Electrician position is at the full performance level located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Sepulveda and West Los Angeles Medical Center Campuses, (Engineering Service).
Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains electrical systems, including new and existing electrical lines, circuits, transformers, secondary distribution panelboards, and switchgear. Loads and tests electrical components supplying various voltages (120/208/277/480), amperages, and phases.
Works on interior and exterior lighting systems, including high-intensity lighting, electrical detection systems, and emergency power systems (generator controls, switchgear, and transfer switches). Installs, modifies, loads, and tests high-voltage (below 600 volts) power distribution panels, breakers, transformers, lighting and power circuits, wiring, and conduit runs.
Uses manual and hydraulic power benders, cutters, manual and power threaders, and various hand and power tools. Troubleshoots, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on secondary switchgear, distribution panelboards, motors, motor controls, lighting systems (interior/exterior), kitchen and housekeeping equipment, fire alarm systems, and intrusion alarms.
Inspects for overload conditions and defective equipment or wiring, checks continuity, identifies circuits, and reports defects and serious conditions to the supervisor. Recommends necessary adjustments, replacements, and corrective actions. Performs tests on electrical equipment and components using ammeters, voltmeters, meggers, ohmmeters, power meters, phase sequence indicators, and protective-device test instruments.
Work Schedule: MONDAY - FRIDAY, 0700 am - 0330 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD11337A Physical Requirements: The incumbent performs repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach locations. These tasks require the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in physically demanding and uncomfortable positions.
The incumbent frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds), and less frequently up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). On occasion, and with assistance, the incumbent lifts or moves moderately heavy objects weighing more than 18 kilograms. Working Conditions: The work is conducted both indoors and outdoors.
The incumbent may be required to perform repairs and installations in adverse weather conditions and in work environments that are noisy, dirty, dusty, or greasy. Duties may also involve working on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 9 meters (30 feet) or more, as well as in confined spaces such as manholes or attics.
The incumbent is occasionally exposed to potential hazards including falls, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors, and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises.
