Job Summary

This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are part of the regular career civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain their active membership in the AF Reserve unit where assigned. ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month.

Key Responsibilities

The primary purpose of this position is: to remove, install, modify, overhaul, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, align, calibrate, and rebuild integrated electronic avionics systems where the output of a number of sensor subsystems is integrated into a logic subsystem and the resultant used to modify the operation of the total system.

The worker in this career field must demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance on one or more complete electronic integrated systems associated with the assigned aircraft and/or maintenance on automatic flight control systems, instrument systems, environmental systems, radar, communications, and navigation systems. Provides training to traditional reservist and other assigned personnel in the accomplishment of tasks herein.

Duties: 1: Removes, installs, modifies, overhauls, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, aligns, calibrates, and rebuilds integrated electronic avionics systems where the output of a number of sensor subsystems is integrated into a logic subsystem and the resultant used to modify the operation of the total system. 2: Performs pretest, operational (functional), or final testing of electronic systems, components, or subassemblies.

Prepares/executes effective training plans to maximize training and complies with security procedures, regulations and policies.

3: (Electro-Environmental) Installs, inspects, modifies, repairs, services, replaces, adjusts and overhauls complex integrated electrical/ environmental systems, both on and off equipment, to include, but not limited to: oxygen, fire suppression, air conditioning, pressurization, ice/rain protection, bleed air systems, avionics cooling systems, cargo/mission handling, missile interface units/bomb doors, anti-skid systems, landing gear, ignition, stall warning, flight control, AC/DC power supply and distribution, Integrated Drive Generator, fuel and explosive systems.

4: Advises engineering personnel on the operation and maintenance effects of proposed Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTO) and/or modifications on new or existing equipment. 5: Utilizes safety practices and tool control procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work area.

Requirements & Education

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs.). Two-man lift for items exceeding 40 lbs. Heavy carrying (40 lbs.). Reaching above the shoulder. Use of fingers. Both hands are required. Hours of walking are approximately 4 hours/day. Hours of standing are approximately 4 hours/day. Hours of repeated bending are approximately 4 hours/week. Climbing, use of legs and arms. Both legs required. Operation of special purpose and/or motor vehicles.

Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of color. Hearing (with or without aid permitted). If it can be otherwise accommodated, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Working around machinery with moving parts. Working around moving objects or vehicles. Works inside and out, on wet, slippery/uneven surfaces, ramps, aircraft surfaces and work stands. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, humidity and inclement weather.

Subject to the dangers from exposure to toxic fumes, fuel, high pressure air and fluids, electrical shock or burns caused by electrical or RF energy. Dangers also include engine noise, blast, ingestion, and fast actuating metal surfaces such as landing gears, and flaps. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases such as Halon.

Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, stands, and aircraft surfaces. Working closely with others. Working alone.
