Job Summary

This vacancy is for a GS-0028-12, Environmental Protection Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, D5 INCIDENT MANAGEMENT BRANCH -DRM in PORTSMOUTH, Virginia.

Key Responsibilities

You will serve as an Environmental Protection Specialist and be responsible for supporting Federal On-Scene Coordinators in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating environmental impacts from oil spills and hazardous substance releases in the marine environment. The role also supports district and sector preparedness by coordinating regional response training, safety and environmental health training, exercise development and execution, and guidance for pollution response.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Advise Federal On-Scene Coordinators and representatives during oil and hazardous substance incident responses, and assist Sectors in executing response duties. Build and maintain partnerships with federal, state, local, non-governmental, and private-sector stakeholders to improve response protocols, identify program gaps, and develop preparedness guidance.

Coordinate and oversee evaluations and inspections of oil spill response equipment and industry preparedness to assess response and recovery capabilities. Support contingency and response plan development for oil and hazardous substance incidents in CG East District, incorporating lessons learned from exercises and real-world events.

Coordinate training, policy implementation, and best-practice sharing across the Marine Environmental Response program, Atlantic Area, East District, Sector offices, government agencies, industry, and technical organizations.

Student Loan - Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent or term position may be eligible for student loan repayment up to $10,000 (pre-tax) for one calendar year. More than one loan may be repaid if the combined repayments do not exceed $10,000. Receipt of this incentive will require a three-year service agreement.
