Job Summary

Lead Accounting Technician is responsible for providing day-to-day technical leadership and coordination for accounting support functions that ensure accurate and timely processing, reconciliation, and reporting of financial transactions. Provides guidance to accounting technicians and clerical support staff on established procedures and internal controls, supports month-end and year-end close activities, and assists in maintaining audit readiness.

Position reports to the Financial Service.

Key Responsibilities

Include but not limited to: Provides day-to-day leadership and coordination of accounting technician work for assigned accounting processes and shared-service support activities. Distributes and balances work among employees based on priorities, deadlines, and workload complexity.

Operating in a multi-billion-dollar portfolio delivering professional federal accounting to ensure stewardship of appropriate funds are accurate and timely processing, policy-compliant financial reporting. Prepares training materials, sets up and schedules training sessions, delivers or coordinates delivery of training to accounting staff and cross-functional customers.

Identifies required training areas based on observed errors, audit findings, policy changes, system updates, or performance trends. Coordinates training needs with supervisor and subject matter expert to develop a training plan and schedule to ensure required staff receive timely instruction. Supports the integrity of accounting records by verifying data entries.

Performs or leads reconciliations of selected accounts, subsidiary logs, and control reports, documents reconciliation steps and resolves or elevates variances. Maintains audit-ready files for assigned processes, ensuring documentation is complete, traceable, and retained per records guidance.

Responds to internal data calls and routine audit/support requests by retrieving records, validating information, and providing timely, accurate responses consistent with established procedures.
