Job Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repairs and reports directly to the Maintenance and Repair Supervisor, General Engineer, or Chief of Facilities Management Services at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Work assignments include both long-term projects and daily tasks, which are generated through the electronic work order system.

Key Responsibilities

The Maintenance Mechanic works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor and must use initiative on maintenance and repair work to identify malfunctions or non-functions, then proceed with corrective actions. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas: tile installation, lock maintenance, plastering, painting, carpentry, door closure installation, plumbing, and minor repairs of water and heating systems.

Duties include but are not limited to: Perform measuring, cutting and constructing using standard building materials. Independently plans and completes projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams. Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools.

Perform work to close tolerances, exact fit and structural soundness. Plan, measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes with general and precision woodworking techniques. Repair plumbing systems. Installing, modifying and repairing new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems. Repair equipment such as sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems, water closets, fire sprinkler systems and showers.

Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of system and equipment. Demonstrate knowledge and skills of using general and specialized tools and equipment of various building trades. Initiate steam system troubleshooting and repair including backflow prevention valves, steam control valves, radiators and coils. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am- 3:30pm.

Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD06649A Physical Requirements: The employee work from ladders, scaffolding, and hydraulic platforms. The role often requires access to confined, unclean, and hard-to-reach areas within utility systems. This position may involve extended periods of crouching and standing, as well as frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in physically demanding and uncomfortable positions.

The employee regularly lifts or transports tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. On occasion, the employee may be required to lift and carry items exceeding 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Performs duties both indoors and outdoors, often in environments with drafts, varying temperatures, dust, grease, heat, fumes, and noise.

May be required to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including rain, mud, snow, wet or icy surfaces. Potential exposure to cuts, burns, chemical irritants, and bruises. Some tasks necessitate the use of protective equipment and clothing, which may be heavy and uncomfortable.
