Job Summary

The Medical Support Assistant - MSA assigned to the Ambulatory Surgical Unit/Post Anesthesia Care Unit/ Anesthesia Pre-OP Clinic & they will be responsible for clerical & administrative support. The MSA is a foundational role within the Patient Centered Care Initiative.

The MSA will work collaboratively with members of the health care team including physicians, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, nursing assistants, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff etc.

VA Careers - Medical Support Assistant: https://youtube.com/embed/EE9c4XkaELo MSA duties and responsibilities include: Addresses all clinical and administrative concerns in collaboration with members of the ASU/APO interdisciplinary team within appropriate timeframes (emergent or non-emergent) and communicates outcomes to relevant parties.

Participates in team huddles and meetings to facilitate patient care planning, establish priorities and deadlines, adjust workflow sequencing as needed, reinforce care plans and self-help strategies, document pertinent information in the electronic record, and monitor pre-appointment readiness requirements. Schedules, cancels, and reschedules patient appointments; records noshow and cancellation data; manages patient check-in for scheduled appointments.

Sends appointment notifications, instructions, and reminders/cancellation correspondence to patients; completes patient check-in procedures, obtains essential information, and initiates administrative processing of requests and forms. Verifies and updates demographic information; conducts basic eligibility checks, co-pay calculations, and preauthorization requirements for insurance coverage.

Utilizes computer-based phone systems to courteously answer and direct multi-line calls; takes comprehensive telephone messages and documents contacts in CPRS via view alerts. Monitors and responds to voicemail communications. Manages incoming and outgoing fax processes and distribution. Oversees multiple reports and lists, including but not limited to electronic wait lists, RTCs, and EARs. May order supplies and submit work orders as required.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday Variable hours between 0530 to 1800. Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as [an] MSA or [an equivalent position in a non-VA hospital or clinic setting].
