Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), at the Hampton VA VA Medical Center. The position serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator under the Environmental Management Service with the Transportation Section. The primary duties of the position are to transport patients, medical equipment, supplies, and other items essential to the operation of a VA Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities

This unit serves the patient transport needs, coordinate, beneficiary travel, and reduce unnecessary payments for special modes of transportation by operating medical transport services as well as regular transportation. The purpose of the position is to operate various types of vehicles primarily to transport patients. Additionally, the position may assist with operation of equipment for snow removal or grass mowing, as needed.

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Operates one or more motor vehicles which typically consist of passenger buses and vans which have an approximate gross vehicle weight up to 14,400 kilograms (32,000 pounds) and that can be equipped with or without air brakes.

Operates vehicles are driven on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules over public roads (or the equivalent) at highway speeds to transport passengers, patients, supplies, materials, or equipment and tools or to tow equipment throughout rural or urban areas.

Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles operated (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, and washing the vehicle). Operates a variety of passenger buses on scheduled or special runs from one location to another. Scheduled runs include work runs and shuttle runs, and special runs include touring trips to such locations as historic sites and recreation facilities.

These drivers comply with a checklist of safety procedures, and insure that the proper protection equipment is present. They complete such paper work as trip tickets and preventive maintenance records. Assists in providing vehicle dispatch duties and clerical assignments in a variety of general support areas required in office environment (i.e.

data entry into VISTA; receiving and directing callers and visitors as needed; receiving, collecting and delivering mail as needed; copying and completing forms and questionnaires; data retrieval, and dissemination).

Assists accompanying medical personnel in loading, unloading and securing patients; Performs required operator maintenance; Checks material loaded or delivered against various documents to prevent errors and to certify the condition of items; Determines route to be followed, taking into consideration such factors as ongoing hospital activities, weight limitations, and safety conditions; Assures vehicle is not overloaded; Loads and unloads crated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles; Performs other duties as assigned.
