Job Summary

This Registered Nurse position is located at the VA Domiciliary Unit in Indianapolis, IN. The Domiciliary is a 50 bed state-of-the-art residential care unit for Veterans who need rehabilitative services and treatment for recovery, health maintenance, improved quality of life, and a smooth transition back into their communities.

Key Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessments, diagnosis, and medication management for veterans with acute exacerbation of mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders, as well as a variety of co-morbid chronic medical illnesses. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Provides and leads the provision of competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients.

Assists in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies, and provides quality improvement and outcome utilization consultation. Provides patient-centered and recover-oriented care to patients living with substance use disorder and/or other mental health conditions.

Facilitates shift reports, nurse-led psychoeducational groups, uses therapeutic communication techniques, practices de-escalation techniques, utilizes recovery-oriented language, and provides oversight of the patient safe medication management program. Actively participates in mental health interdisciplinary treatment teams, patient safety and environment care rounds, and responds to psychiatric and medical care needs and emergencies as directed.

Reports safety concerns, documents nursing assessments, risk screens, nursing plans of care, patient safety rounds, and environment of care rounds according to agency policy. Maintains professional boundaries to protect patient vulnerabilities and acts in the best interest of the patient. Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of fellow health care professionals.
