He/she/they will perform this in the inpatient setting primarily within the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). Provides anesthesia for a variety of surgical cases. The provider will be part of a multidisciplinary team within the SICU and will be required to have strong interpersonal interaction skills.
The nature of the job requires timely and effective communication with a variety of consultants, the Tele-ICU and surgical services as part of the comprehensive care of patients with critical illness. Assesses and manages critically ill perioperative patients in the surgical intensive care unit. Serves as a patient population of simple to highly complex patients with significant comorbidities who are awaiting or have undergone diverse surgical procedures.
Identify and intervene upon patients who have deviated from the expected postoperative recovery trajectory. As necessary, perform routine invasive procedures common to critical care practice areas. The provider will also provide anesthetics for a variety of procedures at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, including major and minor vascular, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic, podiatry, plastics, cardiac cases (bring backs on call) and neurosurgical cases.
Other duties of the provider will be the preoperative evaluation of patients, postoperative management of patients in recovery, the screening of pain consultation, and out of OR airway management as required during regular duty hours and while on call. May include additional duties delegated by the Associate Chief of Staff of Anesthesiology. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Subject to change based on the needs of the agency.
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
